Losing Your Computer with Pepper Phillips

.
NaNo has been tougher for some writers than others this month.
.
Meaning that they lost work, lost their computer, or a hurricane disrupted them when their battery died.
.
My son had his home broken into, and the thieves stole his brand new monster television that I bought him as a house warming gift.
.
His neighbor had a brand new computer taken from his house two months prior.
.
Which brings us to the point of this blog.
.
What would you do if your computer disappeared today?
.
Do you have back-ups that are not on your computer. It doesn’t pay to have a flash drive backup when it is attached to the computer and someone takes it. You would need to remove the flash drive every time you left the house. What about an external hard drive? I have one of those, but I don’t know how to reload my information. You can also do a back up on a online source.
.
Every day I’ve trained myself to back up my manuscript to four places. My Documents, My Desktop, flashdrive and Dropbox. My external hard drive does it’s own thing.
.
The best of the lot if your computer crashes with no way to retrieve anything, or is stolen, is to have a free Dropbox account. It’s located somewhere over the rainbow, next to that pot of gold. You can reach it on any computer. If you need more space, you can purchase more.

I’ve been using Drop BOx for years I love it. Before I had a desktop and a laptop to switch back and forth between and keeping the manuscript emailed to myself was a PITA . Once someone told me about dropbox I was like oh wow this is way cool. The only thing I forgot was the password and the bad part is if you open it when you don’t have internet access and write in your document then you two copies of it. For those days I’m stuck without internet (like family that isn’t wifi connected or has no internet GASP) I write on a new word document then I copy and past when I get home or to an internet access point. Thanks for reminding me I need to go refresh the password so I can access it during the holidays ;-).

I use Dropbox. Everytime I leave off writing, the last thing before i close my files is update the file in dropbox. Istore eveything there as well as on the memory stick on my car key ring. that way I have two lots of backup.
